About Phosphine Detection

Phosphine, a highly toxic and flammable gas with a garlic- or fish-like odor, is used primarily for fumigation in grain storage, agriculture, and food processing facilities.

Phosphine is a highly toxic, colorless, and flammable gas used primarily to control insect pests in stored grain, silos, warehouses, shipping containers, and other enclosed commodity-storage areas. It is also used in semiconductor manufacturing to introduce phosphorus into silicon and in certain chemical-production processes.

Pure phosphine is odorless. Commercial or technical-grade phosphine may have a garlic-like or decaying-fish odor, but smell does not provide a reliable warning of hazardous concentrations. Exposure can affect the respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, and gastrointestinal systems. Severe exposure may cause pulmonary edema, cardiovascular collapse, seizures, or death.

Because phosphine can remain in enclosed areas during fumigation, aeration, unloading, and re-entry, accurate gas detection, ventilation, and controlled-entry procedures are critical for worker safety.

Common Challenges

  • Detecting phosphine at very low, sub-ppm concentrations.
  • Verifying that silos, bins, containers, and fumigated areas are safe before re-entry.
  • Maintaining reliable monitoring in grain dust, humidity, and changing temperatures.
  • Monitoring multiple locations where phosphine may collect or remain trapped.
  • Preventing reliance on odor as a warning method.
  • Maintaining sensor calibration and reducing interference from other gases.

Guidelines: United States

  • OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit: 0.3 ppm over an 8-hour workday.
  • NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit: 0.3 ppm over a 10-hour workday.
  • NIOSH Short-Term Exposure Limit: 1 ppm over 15 minutes.
  • NIOSH Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health: 50 ppm.

Guidelines: Australia

Until November 30, 2026:

  • 8-hour TWA: 0.3 ppm.
  • 15-minute STEL: 1 ppm.

Beginning December 1, 2026:

  • 8-hour TWA: 0.05 ppm.
  • Peak limit: 0.15 ppm.
